In late July 2021, Jennifer Bender visited us at the Clarksburg Mission. She wanted to talk to us about her son, Levi. Levi Bender was a Life Scout, working towards becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts. To become an Eagle Scout, one has to complete a community service project. Levi had already chosen what he wanted to do.
He was going to help renovate the kitchen at the Clarksburg Mission. He loved serving meals and talking with our residents. He had seen the antiquated kitchen and dining room. He saw the older equipment and the lack of space. Levi and his mother had reached out to the Mission, and we looked forward to working with him. Sadly, we never got the chance. Less than a week later, on August 1, 2021, Levi died in a tragic car accident. Levi Bender was only 16 years old.
Jennifer Bender, Levi's mother, decided to finish his project. We are working together to finish Levi's last project, a renovation of our kitchen. We are hoping to raise $100,000 to completely overhaul our cooking area. This will include, flooring, equipment, painting, plumbing, and more. Levi was planning on nothing less than a complete kitchen makeover.
Levi Bender wanted to complete a project that would have an impact well beyond simply attaining his Eagle Scout rank. A new kitchen at the Mission would have a life of its own, giving and welcoming and feeding people long after the work was done. This is an ambitious project, but Levi's heart was big and generous and kind.
The Levi Bender Project is both an expression of grief and celebration. Though Levi died much too young, we have a chance to be part of his legacy. Please, consider opening your heart and become a part of this good work. Any contribution you make will go towards the Levi Bender Project.
Thank you, and may God bless you.
